Following Gunshop's work on Showdown, Goodby, Silverstein & Partners approached us with an ambitious interactive project. The idea was an online racing game that would allow players to upload a photo of themselves and drive as their favorite NASCAR driver.

The project began with an asset from Showdown: a 2D track from the perspective of the driver. From there, we created 4 different looping versions and 4 turns all done in After Effects with a combination of warping and z-depth offsetting.

We followed that with a green screen shoot, some modeling in Maya, compositing in After Effects and Photoshopping 20 drivers helmets.  Everything was handed off to a web development team that produced the final game. Check out the final edit below!

Here's a short edit I put together that shows how the car interior and driver shot was created. It starts with a green screen shoot, followed by some modeling and lighting passes in Maya, and finishes with some tracking and compositing in After Effects.

The helmets were first modeled in 3D, with the designs created in Photoshop based on photographic references of the drivers.  This was a surprisingly tricky process since the photos were taken from a variety of angles and under varying lighting situations. I learned a lot about Photoshop making these helmets ;)
